Because of You

I retired in April 2019, and my Precious Angel was diagnosed in June with small cell carcinoma of the ovaries.Wow. What a blessing for Shannan and me to take this journey together. What followed were three glorious years of challenges. All because of you, cancer. When Shann was first diagnosed, I stayed at her apt. Because of you, she laid her head on my lap for me to rub. Just as she did as a child. I loved it. Because of you, we spent countless times in the hospital. Surgery, transfusions, fevers, low white blood count, and more. Because of you, we relished all the hospital stays. I would climb into bed with her. We’d cuddle and laugh. I’d tuck her in and kiss her lovely forehead. Again and again. When it was chemo time, because of you, we traveled to Sloan in the City, via LIRR, subway, or cab. What a lovely adventure with my daughter. She taught me the ins and outs of Manhattan. Because of you, cancer, we walked and talked, hand in hand, arms locked, enjoying NYC!! If we didn’t want to leave the city via train, we would Uber it and talk the ride away. Because of you, cancer, I learned so much. Shannan was always a wealth of knowledge.
She knew everything about you, cancer. Shannan took control. Ready for the challenge. Because of you cancer, I spent so much time at Shann’s apt. I would cook while she rested. Because of you, we spent many twilight’s eating dinner and talking. Because of you, we slept in the same bed, watching tv, laughing, eating snacks and dozing. Because of you, cancer, we had a Mom and Daughter slumber party, every night. We loved it. Because of you, pet therapy was discussed, which resulted in Fiona!! My adorable granddog. As Shannan so eloquently put it, “ Fiona was my best investment “. Because of you, Fiona brought an immeasurable pleasure to my lovely daughter. You see cancer, Shannan always exhibited dignity, style, and grace. before you and during your .invasion. You didn’t take that from her. She maintained so much strength and confidence. Holding her head high and persevering. Because of you, the quantity and quality of the time we shared, was priceless. So cancer. There are no thankyous. You’re not appreciated. Just know you never touched our love.
